It gives me great pleasure to add my little piece to this excellent collection of Australian Verse. From Michael Cowan in Year I to Kathleen Jennings in Year 12, you will discover a passionate vision of our wonderful country. These young people who have contributed to this collection are expressing a powerful message on the fabric of Australian culture. Carmel Dunn provides some good advice in her poem The Sounds of a Nation'.

The Little Swaggies' written competition began in 1996 and is held in conjunction with the annual Bronze Swagman push verse competition hosted by Vision Winton. Each year over 500 entries have been received for the Little Swaggies' competition, and all poems are displayed at the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton.

Carmel Randle (the Editor) has been a passionate advocate of bush poetry. She has travelled the highways and by-ways of Queensland, from Brisbane to Boulia, nurturing the creative instincts in young Australians. The presentation of this collection is a credit to Carmel and I join with all those young people who have entered the competition in thanking Carmel for her endeavours.
