Since launching the new Book Nook in 2010 with free post, we have attempted to absorb many price increases to keep our service the most competitive option for you.
Due to a further round of annual Australia Post increases in July we have had to review our pricing so as to keep our service viable.
Unfortunately this means we are having to monitor more actively and adjust pricing in that environment. The high relative value of the Australian dollar is also impacting on our pricing.
Following that review we have had to increase the postal pricing to help cover these additional costs:
This is the first increase in the Shipment Fee since January 2010 and we have tried to keep the price rise simple to assist you in making your own adjustments.
These increases will be effective for orders received from Monday 22nd August 2011.
Do not hesitiate to contact us with any questions.

In response to a common request for monologues for that tricky in between stage “too cool” for children’s monologues but not ready to take on young adult roles, which often contain adult themes and sometimes strong language, we have sourced a range of teen monologues suitable for middle school and junior secondary students. Follow the links to view what we have on offer, and don’t hesitate to request any favorites we have missed, we are constantly updating our catalogue.

Our most popular item in the Commedia range continues to be the Complete Commedia Teaching Kit (plain) - not that it’s at all plain, just not painted. It contains 10 quality Commedia Masks made in lightweight, durable rubber plus the DVD, an intensive Commedia workshop featuring ‘mask maestro’ Ross Brown, character notes, lesson plans, scripts and a wall chart.
The same masks are available in the Commedia Masks - Plain Complete Set of 10 which includes Character Notes explaining the appearance, voice, costume, plot function and relationship to other characters and audience, of each mask.
Teaching Commedia dell’Arte by Tony Kishawi has also been very popular this year.

We are excited to announce that we have found a supplier of clown noses which we’ve added to our catalogue to complement Karen’s review of the delightful ‘The Clown, from Heart to Heart’. The word (from a professional clown) is that the clip-on plastic variety are best for student clowns. We also have an alternative foam variety available. If you happen to be seeking a top-of-the-range professional clown nose please contact us, as our suppliers carry a great range ‘to order’ that are not on our website.
For many years we have supplied schools with lightweight plastic masks both the very popular white neutral mask and also the ‘secret agent’ range (Female Blue Makeup, Female Green Makeup, Male Plain and Male with Moustache), which are clear masks with painted highlights which change and disguise the wearer instilling a sense of freedom and fun. We have recently added these to our website: Masks (including Clown Noses) and Commedia dell’Arte Masks.
In the shop we are frequently asked, "what are other people buying?" So we thought we’d share our bestselling plays for the past year:
Retail businesses, and especially booksellers are certainly ‘living in interesting times’; with some buyers finding themselves on restricted budgets (personally or mandated by their school), while others may be attracted by some of our competition. We are gratified and encouraged by the loyalty shown by so many of our valued customers.
We really appreciate your support.
As an independent family-run business we may not have the volume of trade larger businesses have, to allow us to always be able to match all the discounts for titles from the biggest international publishers, but what we do offer is arguably the largest inventory of Australian and International Plays in Australia. We have a carefully selected catalogue of teaching texts, professional reference and performing arts theory and history. As well, we have useful resources for speech and drama specialists - such as poems for performance and monologues for all ages and stages - for audition and competition. We also offer full service in person and by phone, fax and email in addition to our extensive website. We research and order titles for you from publishers all over the world and post them all over Australia.
If you are a new customer please contact us and introduce yourself: we look forward to assisting you.
If you are already a Book Nook customer we’d really appreciate a recommendation to your friends and colleagues; we need to increase sales to stay competitive in these interesting times. As new owners we bought Book Nook because we believe in the significant contribution Australian plays and playwrights make to our culture and the value of sharing new and timeless international plays with new audiences.
Your support of Book Nook helps keep this dream alive.
The Scribo Group (one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest independent book distributors) has fallen victim to the poor state of the local market as it moves to close doors. Click here for information about Scribo or here for their announcement.
We're doing our best to find alternate distribution channels for Scribo’s books.
