Title: Laban for All
Author: Newlove, Jean and Dalby, John
Price: $34.99

Rudolf Laban is one of the great theorists and practitioners of movement. He laid down a system of analysing - and annotating - the way the human being moves in space. He ascribed values to these movements, releasing the expressive power contained within each one of them.

Laban For All offers a simplified version of his system which can be used by relative beginners upwards. The result is a thorough - and thoroughly practical - grounding in the most significant movement system of modern times.

Each new term is accompanied by very specific illustrated exercises, designed to strengthen and deepen our understanding. When we have grasped - and practised - the basic vocabulary, we move on to its expressive possibilities in drama and dance.

Jean Newlove was Laban's assistant when he came to England as a refugee in 1938. She became movement teacher at Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, and stayed for 15 years, marrying the co-founder, Ewan MacColl. (Their daughter was Kirsty MacColl.) Since then she has taught Laban's ideas at the RSC and on courses all over the world. She is the author of Laban for Actors and Dancers (NHB); John Dalby is a voice teacher, writer and performer, who assisted at Laban's early courses.
