If the play hasn't been published, how is it that it has been performed in English with theatre companies, groups etc? Is there a different mode of access for actors, groups etc?

There are a great many good plays which are never published, plays usually come into existence because they are commissioned by a producer or theatre company.

The decision to publish and print depends on projected future demand – e.g.

  • whether other companies will want to produce and perform to play,
  • whether schools will want to study it and
  • whether there will be sufficient public interest from individuals who are interested in buying a copy to read.
  • This also depends on how good and how popular the play is and how well known the writer/s are.

Theatre companies can get access to plays to perform through the writer’s agent with a contractual agreement (rights).

I hope this explains the process.
